The Northern Lights at Shepherd Farms

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Psalm 19:1

In the grand tapestry of creation, there are wonders that testify to the majesty and glory of God. One such wonder is the ethereal display of lights known as the aurora borealis, often referred to as the Northern Lights. These shimmering lights that dance across the night sky can be seen as a divine manifestation—a heavenly spectacle that emanates from the throne of God.

In the book of Isaiah 40:22, it is written, “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.” This imagery of God's throne above the earth, overseeing His creation, resonates with the mystical beauty of the aurora borealis. Just as the lights form vibrant curtains in the sky, one can imagine them as the glowing emanations of God's presence reaching down towards humanity.

The colors of the aurora borealis, ranging from shades of green to purple to pink, can be seen as symbolic representations of God's attributes. The shimmering green hues may signify His evergreen nature, constant and everlasting. The royal purple speaks of His sovereignty and majesty, while the gentle pink hues represent His love and compassion. In the book of Revelation 4:3, it describes the throne of God with a rainbow that shines like an emerald—an image that resonates with the radiant glow of the aurora borealis.

When one gazes upon the aurora borealis, it is as if witnessing a divine light show orchestrated by the Almighty Himself. The shifting patterns and colors evoke a sense of awe and wonder, reminding us of the infinite creativity and power of our Creator. Just as the psalmist declared in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands,” so too does the aurora borealis proclaim the majesty and splendor of God's heavenly kingdom.

Therefore, let us marvel at the celestial display of the aurora borealis with spiritual eyes, seeing it not merely as a natural phenomenon but as a manifestation of God's glory descending from His heavenly throne. As we contemplate the beauty and mystery of the Northern Lights, may our hearts be lifted in praise and adoration to the One who sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, illuminating the night sky with His divine radiance.
