Cultivating Meekness
“But the MEEK shall inherit the earth; And shall delight themselves in the abundance of PEACE.”
Psalm 37:11
Sounds simple, right? Not so fast.
In the Bible, the term "meek" is associated with humility, gentleness, and patience. It refers to someone who is not easily provoked or angered, who is willing to submit to God's will, and who demonstrates strength under control. The concept of meekness is exemplified in Jesus Christ, who is described as meek and humble in heart in the Bible (Matthew 11:29).
When the bill arrives that we can’t pay, do we remain meek or stressed and unnerved?
When there is a problem with a family member, and we don’t know how to fix it, do we remain meek?
When someone has
wronged us,
cheated us,
lied to us,
angered us,
ignored us,
forsaken us,
neglected to care for us,
hurt us,
triggered us…
do we remain meek?
Abundance of peace, TRUE PEACE, is directly correlated to meekness.
I am working to practice meekness. I often fail but thank God His mercies are new every morning, every moment, and available to implement right now.
Life in this world is a daily grind. It can be OVERWHELMING to say the very least. “There’s always something,” as the saying goes, and that “always something” often comes in the middle of trying to stay afloat financially or dealing with a health issue, etc. It layers atop our sincere efforts to overcome guilt, consequences of wrongful past decisions, strained relationships, unfulfilled longings, and our anxieties over present worries and concerns. The desire for rest and peace can often feel insurmountable.
Can the solution be that simple, Lord?
Be meek. Cultivate meekness? Respond in meekness in the midst of the storm?
Maybe it’s worth a go. The Creator spoke it. Jesus spoke it. Perhaps that’s what’s missing. Perhaps the lack of restraint in the midst of the moment is what’s causing the cycle of unwanted circumstances to repeat.
In Psalm 37:11, it says our meekness directly correlates to our peace. 🔑😱
Cultivate meekness. Put on meekness.
This one isn’t easy. Those who think they aren’t easily triggered and have a spirit of self-control may find themselves wanting when the storm invades.
It’s a worthy challenge. There is no doubt this is “next level” maturity.
The meek shall inherit the earth.
That’s a big promise that belongs to a BIG goal, not to be easily skimmed over when reading the pages. Pause. Selah. Explore and ponder meekness. What does this mean for YOU to be meek, to respond in meekness, to put on meekness when you’re about to lose your temper? You know… the moment when it really counts.
You realize this is why you’re here, right? To grow in wisdom, to be transformed into the image of Christ. You can’t do this alone. It’s impossible. However, with Christ and the power of His Holy Spirit at work in you day by day, moment by moment, the goal of meekness will be achieved. Peace will be achieved. It’s possible.
Let’s begin, or perhaps, let’s begin again.
